Abstract
1,213,622. Glazing. STEATITE & PORCELAIN PRODUCTS Ltd. 4 Oct., 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 29824/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions B2, H1 and H2] A ceramic article e.g. a power-line electrical insulator, is provided with a conductive or semiconductive layer by applying to the article a layer of a base composition (C) in which a mixture of Sb and Sn oxides has been incorporated to provide a conductor phase, and firing in two steps: (a) at < 1000‹ C. in an atmosphere (A a ) containing a substantial proportion of O 2 , and subsequently (b) at a higher temperature in an inert atmosphere (A b ) which does not contain a substantial proportion of O 2 . (A b ) may be N 2 containing < 5% 02, e.g. < 0-1% O 2 ; it may also contain H 2 0 vapour or # 20% CO 2 , and may be produced by burning propane in air. (C) may be either a glaze base composition (G) or a body base composition (B), similar to those described in Specification 1,213,621 and may be used as described therein to provide a coating on a green porcelain insulator body, by dipping the body in a slip of (C), drying and firing, the resulting glaze having resistivity as defined therein 10<SP>5</SP> megohm, e.g. 0À001-100 megohm. The glaze may form the surface layer of the article, or may in turn be coated with a non-conducting glaze.
