[Also in Groups XXIII and X] A ceramic body, particularly an electric insulator made of porcelain, is covered with a glaze which is under compression throughout the normal operating-range of temperatures, and has a coefficient of expansion less than that of the body. The body may be made from a mixture composed of 24À4 per cent by weight of flint, 30 per cent of potash felspar, 17À6 per cent of kaolin, and 28 per cent of ball clay. A suitable glaze may be made from a mixture composed of 32À1 per cent by weight of flint, 22À1 per cent of felspar, 14À5 per cent of whiting, 12 per cent of ball clay, 5À2 per cent of zinc oxide, 2À1 per cent of magnesite, and 12 per cent of kaolin. In general, the glaze should be made from a mixture in which the percentage by weight of silica is of the order of five times the amount of potassium oxide, sodium oxide and calcium oxide taken together.
