Abstract
A sparking-plug insulator is made by firing a shaped article formed of a mixture of finely ground alumina and zirconium silicate, the latter forming 1-15 per cent by weight of the mixture, at a temperature, e.g. 1600-1750 DEG C. sufficient to decompose the zirconium silicate and form an aluminium zirconium silicate, but insufficient to cause deformation other than uniform shrinkage. The preferred amount of zircon is from 2,5 to 5 per cent. Preferably, the finely ground ingredients are mixed with a synthetic resin as a temporary binder and moulded under heat and heavy pressure as described in Specification 472,110.
