Abstract

Ceramic materials are produced by shaping and firing at an elevated temperature clay containing a dispersion of a heavy petroleum fuel oil having a viscosity above 170 s.s.u. at 100 DEG F. Not more than 12 per cent. of oil by weight of clay is used. The preferred viscosity, proportion, and flash point of the oil is between 700 and 4000 s.s.u. at 100 DEG F., 1 to 6 per cent. by weight of clay, and below 200 DEG F. respectively. The clay can be mixed in a mill with the oil or with an emulsion thereof in water, or the oil can be injected as a mist into a chamber through which the clay particles fall freely. In an example, an oil described as Bunker C fuel oil is used. Bituminous petroleum fuel oils may also be used.
