Abstract

577,138. Breaking mineral oil emulsions. BURNAM, T. W. Aug. 16, 1943, No. 13296. [Class 91] Natural petroleum brine emulsions are broken by means of a gelatinous mass of a cellulose ether such as ethyl cellulose, the material becoming gelatinous on contact with the emulsion and then'causing it to separate into dehydrated petroleum and brine. The process may be effected by agitation of the material with the emulsion and then allowing to settle, or preferably by floating a layer of the material on a small quantity of brine at the bottom of a tank and then introducing the emulsion beneath the layer of the material to flow therethrough and separate into dehydrated oil above the gelantinous layer of material and brine below. The cellulose ether is preferably dissolved in a solvent such as a high aromatic content petroleum solvent, a coal tar hydrocarbon, or an alcohol. To reduce the consistency of the gelatinous layer which forms in use, a plasticizing agent may be added such as a plasticizer of the urea formaldehyde, urea melamine formaldehyde. or alkyd resin types. The petroleum is not only dehydrated but solid impurities and tars are removed, the o:l is partially de-waxed, and the sulphur content substantially reduced.
