Abstract

A composition for making insulating refractories comprises by weight 10% to 25% of expanded pearlite, 40% to 75% crude kyanite and 15% to 40% of a calcium aluminate cement, the kyanite having the following composition:- Fe2O3 + TiO2 not more than 2,5%, SiO2 not more than 48%, Al2O3 balance, but at least 50%. The pearlite contains at least 65% SiO2 and at least 10% Al2O3 with a particle size of minus 6 mesh Tyler and not more than 10% minus 100 mesh. The cement binder preferably has a CaO to Al2O3 ratio of at least 1 : 1, contains not more than 3% Fe2O3 and is minus 100 mesh. The powders are mixed with 20% to 65% by weight of water and the mixture may be cast, poured or trowelled followed by air curing and then drying at 200 DEG F to 300 DEG F.
