Abstract

A refractory alumina cement, or the mixture of raw materials used for producing such a cement, has the composition by weight of: ..Al2O3.55 to 80%, ..CaO.8 to 23%, ..Me2O3.5 to 25%, .with or without.Fe2O3.0 to 5%, .and.SiO2.O to 4%, where the trivalent ion of the metal Me has an ionic radius similar to that of Al, i.e. of 0,5 to 0,7 A units. The requisite hydraulic properties are produced by these metal sesquioxides, e.g. Mn2O3, Cr2O3 and/or Ti2O3 Use may be made of slag accumulating in the aluminothermal or electrothermal production of Mn, Cr, Fe-Ti, Fe-Nb-Ta or Fe-V, comminuted to an extent such that less than 20% of residue is left on a screen having a mesh aperture of 0,09 m.m. CaO may be added to give require composition.
