Abstract

In the production of magnesium by the reduction at 1500-1600 DEG C. of lime and magnesia-containing material with ferrosilicon, the starting materials are proportioned so that the slag formed contains (by weight) 44-64% SiO2, 30-53% CaO and 3-14% MgO. The magnesia-containing material may consist of magnesia obtained from sea water or calcined dolomite mixed with additional magnesia.
