Abstract

A ferro-manganese containing 35-40% Si and less than 0.2% P is produced from an oxidic high-P manganese ore by smelting the ore with sufficient SiO2, Al2O3, CaO and p carbonaceous reducing agent to produce the required ferromanganese and a slag containing 25-60% Al2O3, 25-40% CaO and up to 20% SiO2 and tapping the mixture at 1640-1720 DEG C. The ratio Al2O3/CaO in the slag must be at least 1.0.
