Abstract
A method of refining ferrous metals comprises adding to the solid change or to molten metal in a furnace uniformly mixed, preferably finely divided, slag forming constituents consisting of one or more of CaO, MgO, SiO2, Al2O3 and one or more of C, Si, Al CaC2, Ca-Si, and CaCN2. At least 1% of the mixture, based on the iron content of the charge, may be used and the ratio of CaO, MgO, SiO2 or Al2O3 to C, Si, Al, CaC2, Ca-Si or CaCN2 may be between 1:1 and 50:1. The furnace linings may be basic or acidic or neutral and the slag constituents may be adjusted accordingly. It is stated that a cast iron made under one of these slags has some spheroidal graphite present in the metal as cast.
