Abstract
A preliminary treatment of cast iron containing graphitic carbon to render it susceptible to subsequent nodularising treatment, consists in adding to the molten iron a calcium slag comprising one or more calcium compounds and carbon with or without a fluxing agent, and then adding the nodularising agent, and casting the melt. Calcium compounds used include, limestone; calcium silicide, oxide, carbide or fluoride, or mixtures thereof. Chloride, sulphate, and nitrate of calcium are excluded. Calcium fluoride is used as a flux. The carbon may be in the form of coke, graphite, or calcium carbide. The preferred mixture is 3% limestone, 0,75% fluorspar and 1% coke by weight of the melt. The slag may be added to the top of the melt, and after 10 to 20 mins. tapped into a ladle when the nodularising agent is added. For example, 80% of pig iron containing Si, S, P, Mn and over 4% of carbon is mixed with 20% of "silvery iron" containing Si, and the preferred calcium slag mixture added. After 10 to 20 mins. 0,8% of an alloy containing 5% Misch metal, 20% Mg and 75% Cu are added as nodularising agent. Specifications 727,401 and 732,312 are referred to.
