Abstract

In the production of iron in a cupola the pick-up of carbon is increased by adding to the cupola briquettes containing one or more of graphite, calcium carbide and silicon carbide together with a substantial amount of a fluxing agent. The addition may constitute 0.1-10% by weight of the metal charge; a composition exemplified consists of graphite, sodium carbonate, and fluorspar, together with an inert binder such as sodium silicate.
