Abstract
In a process for adding one or both of the elements boron and bismuth to molten iron, the additive is formed into compacts with a high density metallic alloying element, which may form 25-90% by weight of the compact. Suitable high density materials are copper, nickel, iron, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon or chilled iron or steel shot, while the boron may be in the form of ferroboron or manganeseboron alloy. Binders such as gum, starch, dextrin, sodium or potassium silicate or natural or synthetic resins may be employed in the formation of the compacts. Specifications 569,468 and 717,245 are referred to.
