Abstract

An addition agent for adding magnesium to molten iron consists of compacts in which the magnesium is present as nickel-coated magnesium powder and amounts to 10-50% by weight of the compacts. The compacts may be formed wholly of nickel-coated magnesium powder or may also contain powdered diluents, such as iron, silicon, copper or additional nickel. The compacts may incorporate a binder or may be enclosed in polythene bags to facilitate handling; they may also be sintered. The magnesium powder is preferably coated by thermal decomposition of nickel carbonyl.
