Abstract

An exothermic reaction mixture for welding metal workpieces comprises copper oxide, sufficient aluminium powder to reduce the copper oxide to metallic copper, sufficient metallic copper, either alloyed or mixed with the aluminium to absorb a substantial part of the heat of reaction and to form a portion of the molten product of the reaction, and from 2 to 8% by weight of one or more of the elements silver, nickel, zinc, tin and aluminium. The last mentioned one or more elements may be replaced by 0.25 to 1% of phosphorus which may be added as an alloy with copper. Examples are given of mixtures some of which contain also calcium fluoride, calcium-silicon and zinc oxide to act as fluxing agents. U.S.A. Specifications 2,229,045 and 2,277,014 are referred to.
