Abstract

Iron, cobalt and nickel values are recovered from alloys containing at least one of them, preferably in an amount of at least 10% by weight, by first alloying the alloy with aluminium, preferably in an amount of 13-60% by weight, a friable alloy being obtained thereby, which is reacted with a mineral acid, for example, sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, or hydrofluoric acids or mixtures thereof, to obtain the salt of the metal value; the aluminium is also dissolved. The aluminium alloy is preferably prepared by arc or induction welding in a vacuum, and may be broken up mechanically prior to the acid treatment.
