Abstract

Vanadium, niobium and tantalum are refined particularly for the removal of residual oxygen and nitrogen, by melting in an atmosphere of argon in the presence of a small quantity, e.g. up to 2%, of a metal or metal mixture selected from the rare earth metals, scandium and yttrium, the said metal or metal mixture being substantially free from carbon and iron and other metallic impurities. The purifying metal or metal mixture is preferably prepared by reduction of the corresponding fluoride or fluorides with metallic calcium or lithium. Specification 773,822 is referred to.
