Abstract
The mechanical properties, particularly the ductility of metals of Groups IVa, Va, and VIa of the periodic system and of alloys containing over 50 per cent of such metals, which are contaminated by oxygen and/or nitrogen, are improved by reacting the molten contaminated metal or alloy with one or more rare earth metals including lanthanum. The metal or alloy may be melted together with rare earth metal which may be used in the form of mischmetall or in the form of alloys with other metals such as alumium, in which case these other metals may be such as are required in the final alloy. The melting may take place in vacuum or in a rare gas atmosphere. Examples are given of the treatment of titanium, molybdenum, tantalum and an alloy of titanium with 20 per cent manganese.
