Abstract
Undesired gases are removed from and their absorption prevented in molten metals by blowing a washing gas against the surface of the molten metal at such speed that the gas layer next to the metal surface is continually removed, the melt tapped and allowed to solidify in an atmosphere of the washing gas. The washing gas may be a neutral gas, e.g. a rare gas, or may be the vapour of a metallic compound the metal of which may be alloyed with the melt, e.g. chromous chloride, or a metal vapour, e.g. antimony, or contain a gas, e.g. nitrogen, at a vapour pressure in equilibrium with a desired nitrogen content in the melt. The process is stated to be particularly useful in alloying easily nitrided metals with a molten metal, e.g. the addition of ferro-titanium to steel.
