Abstract

317,180. Westberg, S. June 25, 1928. Cementation.-In a process for refining ferrous or non-ferrous metals or alloys, scrap metal is treated with a gaseous reagent in a furnace at a temperature below liquefaction but above 700‹ C. without the presence of, or in contact with, any solid or liquid slag and is subsequently melted in the same furnace. The gaseous reagent used is hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and an inert gas such as nitrogen to which water vapour may be added, or a hydrocarbon with or without hydrogen and an inert gas, and may be introduced at a pressure above atmospheric, e.g. 10 atmospheres, during the final stages the pressure in the furnace may be reduced until a vacuum is produced. The metal after treatment may be melted down and alloyed in a reducing or inert atmosphere at a reduced pressure which is practically zero, and further refinement may be effected by gaseous reagents. Alloying elements may be added to the metal during the purification or during or after the melting. Alloy steels or non-ferrous alloys containing chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and silicon are referred to. Specification 260,646 is referred to.
