Abstract

In the production of spheroidal graphite iron particularly suitable for mechanical working, crude iron is refined by blowing with oxygen to lower the carbon content to the range of 1.2-3.6% and to remove substantially all the silicon. The bath is then deoxidized with a silicon-containing substance to give a silicon content of 0.2-0.5%; a spheroidizing agent and more silicon are next added, and the melt is cast into a chill mould to yield a carbide iron containing .C.1.2-3.6.% by weight .Si.1.0-2.0. .Mn.1.5. .P.0.07. the balance, apart from spheroidizing agent, impurities and incidental constituents, being iron. By annealing the casting above the upper critical point, e.g. at 1010-1065 DEG C. for 1-2 hours the carbides are decomposed to finely dispersed graphite spheroids and austenite. The initial crude iron contains preferably .C.2.5-4.2.% by weight .Si.2. .Mn.0.05-1. .P.0.06. .S.0.3. The spheroidizing agent is preferably magnesium, e.g. in the form of magnesium ferrosilicon, but this may be wholly or partially replaced by cerium, calcium, lithium, sodium or potassium. As exemplified a master alloy containing .Si.47.% by weight .Mg.9. .Ce.10. .Ca.10. .Fe.balance. is used. Prior to its use the melt is desulphurized with sodium carbonate followed by agitation with nitrogen. If the casting is allowed to become cold before it is annealed, it should be preheated at 540-705 DEG C. to uniform temperature before transfer to the annealing furnace; use of the products for steam traps and gear blanks is referred to.
