Abstract
Spheroidal graphite cast iron is made by melting a normal cast iron charge in an acid cupola, blowing oxygen loaded with slag forming agents on to the surface of the metal in a ladle to remove phosphorous and other impurities and reduce the silicon content to less than 1%, and adding silicon magnesium alloys to form the spheroidal graphite structure. The oxygen may be blown from a 10mm. tube supplying 10 cubic meters per ton of the bath under a pressure of 2-10 kg. per square centimeter, raising the temperature of the bath to 1500 DEG C. This blast may be loaded with a suspension of iron oxide such as is produced from the fume evolved by the L.D. process, together with lime and sodium carbonate. Magnesium may then be added in the form of an SiMgFe alloy containing 38-48% Si and 14-20% Mg. Prior to blowing, sulphur may be removed by pretreatment with sodium carbonate, magnesium or calcium carbide. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 630,070.
