In the production of fine-grained iron castings the molten metal is super-heated and saturated with oxidic iron compounds by feeding in iron ore and/or scale and/or an oxygen-containing gas, the super-heated metal containing more than 3% of silicon, and is then cast. Melting and superheating of the metal may be carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere, preferably in a gas cupola, and oxidic iron compounds may be blown into the bath with an oxidizing gas. If necessary, silicon may be added to the super-heated bath as ferrosilicon.
