Abstract

1,167,543. Producing and refining Ni-Ti alloys. W. J. BUEHLER. Sept. 28, 1966 [Oct. 7, 1965], No.43411/66. Heading C7D. Ni-Ti alloys are formed by melting the Ni in an inert atmosphere or in vacuo, and then adding and melting the Ti. Melting may be effected in a crucible of ThO 2 or MgO which is heated in an induction furnace. Oxygen impurities may be removed from the alloy by the method of Specification 1,167, 544. In particular, the alloy may be cast in a heated graphite mould which is progressively cooled from the bottom to the top so as to confine the shrinkage pipe to the top of the alloy in the mould. Specified alloys contain Ni 50-70% by wt., particularly Ni 52-56% by wt, as disclosed in Specification 1, 020, 872.
