Abstract

Carbon steels and alloy steels are refined by adding to the molten steel 0.01 - 0.16% of an alloy comprising: - Al 50 - 99.7% Li 0.3 - 8% rare earth(s) 0 - 13% Ca 0 - 8% Ba 0 - 2% Fe 0 - 20% B 0- 1.7% The alloy may be added to the bottom of the ladle before the steel is poured, may be plunged to the bottom of a filled ladle, or may be added in the furnace or ingot mould in shapes such as stars, grains or wires. The examples relate to the treatment of steels containing specified proportions of C, Mn, Si, P and S and of 12/14 Mn steel.
