Abstract

Ti, or Ti and an alloying metal (e.g. Cu) to produce a Ti base alloy, are melted under a protective fused flux. The flux is preferably one or more of the fluorides of Ca, Sr. Ba, Li, Mg, (e.g. 80 per cent CaF2, 20 per cent MgF2), and the metal may then be cast. A protective atmosphere, e.g. argon may be used; and heating may be by induction or by arc melting in a crucible or on a water-cooled copper hearth. In making the alloy the Ti and alloying addition may be added to the molten flux in either order or together. When casting, the molten Ti or Ti alloy is maintained under the flux until the moment of casting, and although air need not be excluded casting should be in a protective (a.g. argon) atmosphere and preferably into a warm graphite mould.
