A high quality metal alloy ingot is made by fusing a precast consumable electrode 14 of substantially the required analysis but of lower quality, under a protective slag layer 27, while controlling the heat of the electric discharge and cooling of the molten metal to remove gaseous and non-gaseous impurities from the fused metal into the slag. Minor additions of alloying constituents may be made through the slag, above which a vacuum or inert gas may be maintained.
