Abstract
1,137,092. Removing constituents from metals; steel alloy. NYBY BRUKS A.B. March 17, 1966 [March 19, 1965], No.11664/66. Headings C7A and C7D. A metal is refined by blowing a stream of inert gas containing 0À005-10% by volume oxygen against the solid metal surface during heating up to its melting point, and blowing a stream of inert gas containing less than 0À01% by volume of oxygen against the molten metal surface. The metal may be heated discontinuously, halting at a temperature at which a solid impurity leaves the solid metal. For example, stainless scrap steel of composition 0À05%C, 18%Cr, 14%Ni, 3À5% Mo, balance Fe, may be heated up in a high frequency electric furnace while blowing on to its surface argon containing 1-2% by volume oxygen, halting at 750- 850 C. to allow Mo to escape from the steel as brown MoO 3 smoke, and after melting, blowing on to the molten steel surface argon containing less than 0À01% by volume oxygen when temperature has reached 1600-1700 C., to remove gaseous impurities e. g. hydrogen therefrom; the finished steel may contain less than 0À5% Mo and a reduced C content. Powdered alloying constituent may be supplied to the inert gas stream.
