Abstract

<PICT:1096689/C6-C7/1> A steel contains 0.22 C, 0.22 Mn, 0.007 P, 0.013 S, 0.025 Si, 1.56 Cr, 3.15 Ni, 0.37 Mo, 0.14 Cu, 0.04 V, 0.007 Al and has a low gas content of 12 ppm oxygen, 41 ppm nitrogen and 1 ppm hydrogen. In molten state it passes from a funnel 13 into a heated, evacuated ladle 26 to fragment and degas before passing to mould 58 for continuous casting (see Division B3) in a bell cover 43 which is evacuated or contains a non-oxidizing gas. A fusible diaphragm 45 initially seals the ladle 26. The top of the metal in the mould 58 is heated by heater bars 80 or electron guns.
