Abstract
A casting in which at least some of the graphite is in nodular form is produced by tapping the iron, adding high-silicon material, inoculating with calcium carbide, magnesium and rare earth metals, the metal being at 2680 DEG - 2700 DEG F. at the commencement of inoculation and pouring. An inert gas e.g. nitrogen is introduced with the inoculating agents, the gas flow being continued after inoculation is complete, while the addition of silicon must be completed prior to inoculation. The inert gas may be used to inject the inoculating agents into the metal. Silicon may be added partly as ferrosilicon placed in the ladle into which the metal is tapped, and partly as an exothermic composition containing for example .Si.61% .Al.1.25% .Ca.0.5% .Mg.2.75% .NaNO3.13.5% .Fe.balance which is metered into the iron in the tapping spout Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 970,065.
