Abstract

A method of producing up-graded cast iron containing 1.7 to 4.5 per cent carbon, 1-3.5 per cent silicon, and more than 90 per cent iron comprises injecting calcium carbide below the surface of the molten cast iron with a carrier gas in amount not exceeding 2 cubic feet of gas at normal temperature and pressure per pound of carbide, and then casting into moulds. Nodular graphite producing substances, e.g. rare earth metal oxides, magnesium oxide or magnesium, or alloying elements, e.g. chromium, molybdenum, vanadium or manganese may be added with the calcium carbide. The amount of calcium carbide added may be 5-75 lbs. per ton of metal, and may be sufficient to produce at least some nodular graphite when added alone. U.S.A. Specification 2,577,764 is referred to.
