Abstract

A cast iron of the corrosion-resistant type contains 10-20 per cent of silicon and 0.02-1.0 per cent of cerium. The carbon content may be greater than that required to form the eutectic, the hypereutectic carbon being present predominantly in the form of nodular graphite, e.g. as finely divided undercooled graphite. Cerium may be added to the molten cast iron immediately before pouring, e.g. in the form cerium metal, mischmetall, ferro-cerium, cerium carbide or other alloy of cerium or a reducible cerium compound. The production of a cast iron containing 1.19 per cent carbon, 15.0 per cent of silicon, 0.59 per cent of manganese, 0.015 per cent of sulphur, 0.038 per cent of phosphorous and 0.118 per cent of cerium is referred to
