Abstract

An alloy suitable for addition to molten iron to produce spheroidal graphite in the iron casting has the following composition: Si 55-70 per cent; Mg 7-17 per cent; Fe, and impurities, the balance. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements: Cp up to 30 per cent, Mn up to 5 per cent, Ca up to 1 per cent, Al up to 1 per cent, C up to its maximum solubility in the alloy, in practice about 1 per cent. In all cases the Fe content of the alloy is never less than 5 per cent. The impurities which may contain P or Cr will not usually exceed 0.5 per cent.
