Abstract

A method of treating molten iron before casting which comprises introducing nickel, silicon, molybdenum and calcium into the molten iron as a ladle addition, these elements being alloyed together and each 100 parts of the alloy including at least 30 parts of nickel, from 6-35 parts of silicon, from 10-30 parts of molybdenum and 0.1-2 parts of calcium. The alloy employed may contain 6-35 per cent silicon, 10-30 per cent molybdenum, 0.1-2 per cent calcium, chromium not exceeding 20 per cent, iron not exceeding 30 per cent, the balance apart from impurities being nickel and the minimum nickel content being 30 per cent. The alloy may be introduced into molten iron as a late addition and in amount equal to 0.5-5 per cent of the iron cast.
