Abstract
A low-carbon high-silicon ferrous metal containing boron has a microstructure with carbon in the form of compacted graphite, and has a composition such that without boron it would solidify as a white cast iron; the metal has the following composition by weight:-C 1 to 2.5%, Si 1.5 to 3.2%, B 0.001 to 0.05%, with or without S 0 to 0.5%, and Mn with content 1.7 times S content plus 0.2%, with or without Te 0 to 0.01%, and Bi 0 to 0.02%, the total Te and/or Bi up to 0.02%, with Fe as balance. During the production, the melt (e.g. first of low carbon steel and white cast iron) is superheated to a temperature between 2900 DEG F. and 3100 DEG F., then preferably tapped into a ladle (where the boron with or without the Te and/or Bi may be added to the first melt) at a temperature between 2750 DEG F. and 2850 DEG F. and finally poured into a mould at a temperature between 2600 DEG F. and 2800 DEG F. (preferably 2700 DEG F.). The melt may be lanced with a dry gas (e.g. O2, N2, NH3 or A).
