Abstract
A process for the preparation of cast iron having a eutectic graphite formation comprises a first stage in which the molten metal is maintined under a carbon-free slag, a second stage in which a slag of flake graphite is used, and a third stage in which a carbon-free slag is again employed. The graphite slag may be applied for 10 minutes in an amount of 1 - 2 kg/s. on a 600 kg. melt. The final carbon-free slag may be dry core sand. The metal obtained is stated to be particularly suitable for piston rings.
