Abstract

Magnesium is added to cast iron, to produce spheroidal graphite, in the form of nitrided magnesium or nitrided magnesium alloy. The nitrided magnesium may be added as a powder along with a minor proportion, e.g. 15 per cent of elementary magnesium. Graphite, silicon, or ferrosilicon or a combination of these substances may be added with the magnesium. The treated cast iron may be inoculated with ferrosilicon before casting. Specification 630,070 is referred to.
