Abstract
Malleable iron is produced by subjecting a white iron casting containing 0.03 to 0.5 per cent magnesium to a malleabilizing heat treatment to decompose massive carbides to spheroidal graphite and iron. The iron may contain 1.8 to 4 per cent C, 0.4-4 per cent Si, 0.3-5 per cent Ni, 0-2 per cent Cu, .05-2 per cent Mn and below 0.02 per cent S. The heat treatment consists in heating the iron to 840-980 DEG C for 5 to 15 hours and may include a further heating at a temperature below the gamma-alpha transformation of the iron.
