Abstract

A process of producing spheroidal graphite cast iron castings having analyses within the limits C 2-3%, Si 1-2.5%, Mn 0.6-1.6%, Cu or Ni 0-2%, Al or Ti 0-0.15%, Mg (or an equivalent element) 0.05-0.20%, the balance being Fe, comprises quenching from a temperature above that of eutectoid transformation into oil, water, or a molten salt, nucleation tempering at 400-480 DEG C., and graphitizing annealing at a temperature above that of nucleation tempering for a time sufficient to decompose the primary cementite. The castings may be cooled between the nucleation tempering and the graphitizing anneal. It is stated that the treatment results in the formation of 3,000 to 30,000 spherules of graphite per sq. mm. Specifications 742,399 and 742,400 are referred to.
