Abstract
A method of producing malleable cast iron comprises (a) making castings from a white malleable cast iron produced in a cupola furnace; (b) graphitising annealing the castings at 950-1100 DEG C. for 5-20 hours; (c) slow cooling the castings to 800-900 DEG C.; (d) quenching the castings from 800-900 DEG C.; (e) tempering the quenched castings to produce a structure of granular cementite. The treatment may be carried out in a neutral or inert atmosphere or in an atmosphere comprising 17% Co, 25% H2, and the remainder N2 which has a carbon potential of 0,6% at 1014 DEG C.
