Abstract
A method of making steel comprises subjecting a low sulphur pig iron to the basic Bessemer process, deslagging the steel, subjecting the deslagged steel to further blowing with an addition of fine chalk dust in such amount that the final slag has a P2O5 content of less than 10%, carburizing and, if desired, alloying the steel in the ladle, and then subjecting the steel to a vacuum treatment. The metal, while under vacuum, may be stirred by the introduction of an inert gas and may be cast under a protective atmosphere.
