Abstract
A method of producing a low-hydrogen steel comprises refining the melt at a high rate of decarburization and tapping while the melt is still boiling at a decarburization rate of not less than 0.2% C per hour. During the early part of the process, until the carbon reaches about 0.7%, the rate of decarburization may be more than 0.4% C per hour. Oxygen may be blown on to the bath having a highly oxidizing slag and all additions to the bath may be dried. The steel may be deoxidized after tapping. The process results in a steel of the following analysis: 0.62% C, 0.32% Si, 1.84% Mn, 0.016% P, 0.016% S, 2.7 N cm.3 H2 per 100 gms. metal, and the balance Fe.
