Abstract
Slag contg. about 40% Fe, resulting from the reductio of laterite ores, is treated in a submerged arc furnace using a reductant such as coke to produce a final molten Fe contg. about 3% C and 3-3.5% Cr. some solid slag is fed round the periphery of the furnace to protect the magnesite lining from the molten slag. Additions can be made via sealed chutes so that a reducing atmos. can be maintained over the bath. The prod. is molten Fe that is suitable for converting into steel by an oxygen-blowing process.
