Abstract
1,125,005. Metal refining furnaces. BETEILIGUNGS UND PATENTVERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 30 March, 1966 [31 March, 1965], No. 14148/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] The continuous production of steel from molten pig iron is carried out in plant comprising a shaft furnace 1 providing a continuous flow of molten iron, a succession of refining vessels 2, 3 and 4 having oxygen lances 7, 12 and 20 and charging devices 14, 15 and 16 for scraps, ore or fluxing agents, and pumps 11 and 18 in risers 10 and 19, whereby the metal is lifted from one vessel to the next. The slag flows in cascade fashion downwardly through the vessels 2, 3 and 4 and vessel 4 at least is duplicated so that finished steel can always be tapped off as required. Pumps 11 and 18 may he of the airlift variety operating on air, oxygen or an inert gas or may be of the magnetic or thermomagnetic variety. S and Si are removed in vessel 2, C and P in vessel 3, and the refining is completed in vessel 4.
