Abstract
Method and apparatus for the manufacture of steel, the process being characterized by the steps of (a) loading ferrous metal, in liquid and solid form, into a furnace lined with refractory material, to form a metal bath that at least initially it is partially molten; (b) supplying oxygen, surrounded by a jacket gas, into said ferrous metal bath; and (c) supplying another oxygen to the interior of the region of maximum CO evolution above said molten metal bath, said other oxygen being supplied in a plane substantially parallel to that of the upper part of the bath of said ferrous metal and from a angle between 20º above and 20º below the horizontal, approximately, whereby (1) the consumption of steel scrap from said furnace is increased without increasing the loading time; (2) the slag in said ferrous metal bath is fluidized to release metallic iron from said slag; (3) the molten ferrous metal bath is decarburized and the scrap melting speed is increased; (4) said molten metal bath is decarburized simultaneously by said oxygen and by said other oxygen; and (5) the oxygen is balanced with said other oxygen.
