Abstract

1,207,003. Refining iron. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR METALS. Aug. 13, 1968 [Aug. 14, 1967], No. 38628/68. Heading C7D. Molten metal such as pig iron is continuously refined in at least two trough type furnaces arranged in series, each furnace as shown in Fig. 1 including a flow inlet 2 for molten metal at one end and a flow outlet 3 for molten metal at the other end, a blowing zone having at least one lance 4 for feeding oxygen and slagging material, a flow zone adjacent the blowing zone in which slag and metal react while flowing concurrently to the outlet, a slag-off hole 6 and gas-offtake 7 and a skimmer 5 for separating slag and gas from the outflowing metal. Alternatively as shown in Fig. 2 the slag and metal may flow countercurrently in the flow zone the slag-off hole 6 and gass-offtake 7 being situated near the metal inlet 2. Metal may flow from one furnace to the next via an intermediate reservoir, Fig.5 (not shown). In an example using four furnaces in series, dephosphorization, silicon and manganeze removal and a minor amount of decarburization is effected in the first furnace at a temperature in the range 1300-1550‹ C. with addition of slag-forming material such as lime in the range 1/60 to 1/15 of the pig iron treated and with a mean residence time of molten metal in the furnace of 1 to 15 minutes. In the second furnace the major decarburization is effected at a temperature of 1550-1700‹ C. In the third furnace a final refining is effected and in the fourth the metal is deoxidized and its composition adjusted.
