Abstract
1,143,526. Metallurgical converters. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. 9 March, 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 11160/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for steelmaking (Fig. 1) comprises a refining chamber through which metal flows continuously from inlet 13 to outlet 14, while oxygen is blown into it through lances 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. The chamber is divided into two refining zones 10, 11, and has also a slag separation chamber 12 into which the slag formed in zones 10, 11 is caused to flow by the action of low angle gas jets 40, 41, the inclination of lances 18, 19, 20 and by the presence of water-cooled refractory projection 21, which may be replaced by a continuously replenished bank of dolomite (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), zone 11 may be subdivided to provide a third refining zone, flow of slag into this zone being prevented by a water-cooled slag bridge (36) or by inclined gas jets. In further modifications, the chamber may be V-shaped, or may be in the shape of a tuning fork.
