Abstract

1277083 Metallurgical converters COLUMBIA GAS SYSTEM SERVICE CORP 22 April 1969 [25 June 1968] 20460/69 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] Steel scrap is melted by charging it to a vessel containing a molten bath into which fuel and oxygen-rich gas are also separately supplied. As shown in Fig. 1 the vessel is formed with a well 15 the volume of which is sufficient to contain the initial bath when the vessel is in the horizontal position; fuel is supplied through plenum chamber 25 and tuyeres 23 while oxygen is blown into the bath through lances 34, 35, the waste gases being discharged through conduit 37. By using charging hopper 38 and taphole 39 the process may be operated continuously. In the modification of Fig. 3 both fuel and oxidant are introduced below the bath by means of a divided plenum chamber, fuel being provided through line 105 and oxygen through line 106; if necessary the latter may be diluted by inert gas or combusted waste gas supplied through line 107. In the further embodiment of Fig. 5 the vessel is divided internally by a divider 130, and the fuel (lance 138) and oxygen (lance 137) are introduced into the bath surface in separate compartments, scrap being introduced into the third compartment from hopper 140. Provision is made for operating any of the vessels at increased internal pressure.
