Abstract

1,153,938. Refining pig iron. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. Oct.6, 1967 [Oct. 11, 1966], No.45912/67. Heading C7D. The refining of pig iron in a solid bottomed converter is controlled by first determining, preferably on a theoretical basis, the starting materials (pig iron, scrap, scale and lime) necessary for carrying out a required refining, then during refining regulating the depth of surface penetration of the jet(s) of oxygen into the molten bath, e.g. between 10 and 75% of the height of the bath (supposed at rest), so that the rate of removal of carbon from the bath follows a time graph determined by prior calculations, and regulating the blowing so that the rate of absorption (fixing) of the oxygen by the slag constituents also follows a time graph determined by prior calculations. An example is given wherein a phosphorus pig iron containing 3À9% C is decarbonized into a steel containing 0À047%C, the process being controlled as above to follow ideal time graphs, two analyses being effected before and after a deslagging operation.
