Abstract

1343364 Refining metal FRIED KRUPP HUTTENWERKE A G 11 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 6507/72 Heading C7D A metal is refined by moving a stream of molten metal along a channel in counter-current to slag, e.g. in an inclined counter-current channel in which a metal 4 is drawn up the incline by an electro-magnetic travelling field pump, the slag/ metal reaction being promoted by the action of the nozzles 7, 8, 11 which emulsify the metal and slag. The nozzles are inclined to prevent the metal (12) Fig. 2 (not shown) in contact with the channel walls from moving in the same direction as the slag and maybe inclined to the slag-metalboundary surface. The refining of pig iron, scrap or similar material to form steel may be performed by the method. The gas injected may be oxygen or a reducing gas which is preferably mixed with an inert gas. Gas forming substances such as limestone or hydrocarbons may also be injected to assist in accelerating the metal-slag reaction.
